Maharana Fateh Singh was the son of Maharaj Dal Singh of Shivratri branch of Mewar dynasty. But later he was first adopted by his elder brother Gaj Singh and then subsequently by Maharaja Sajjan Singh of Udaipur as both of them had no heir. After ascending the throne he worked for the betterment and upliftment of the people of his kingdom. He bought a revolution in the living standards and educational institutes by bringing modernization and mainly focused on roads, education, land revenues and irrigation so that it can improve the living condition of Mewar which showed the rise in his ruling period.
During his rule, he built Fateh Prakash Palace in Chittorgarh Fort, Shiv Nivas Palace in Udaipur which was reserved exclusively for the VIP’s guest and now converted into a heritage hotel. The other landmark built by him in Udaipur is “Connaught Dam” to memorize the visit of Duke of Connaught, son of Queen Victoria and later it was renamed as Fateh Sagar Lake. He was the only Maharaja who did not attend the Delhi Durbar twice and later due to this attitude he has abdicated all his powers in favor of his heir Bhupal Singh.
